Coexist in Harmony with Geese this Spring

It’s that time of year again where many birds will soon be (or already have begun) nesting!

Some species, like Canada Geese, may choose unusual locations. In natural areas, geese tend to nest in elevated areas near waterways so they can see predators approaching. In the Lower Mainland, because of urbanization, these goose nesting sites tend to be atop rooftop gardens or apartment balconies.

While some locations may seem unsafe, it is important to never disturb them as Canada Geese are protected under the Migratory Bird Convention Act and cannot be relocated without a permit. Instead, you can contact one of the resources below for help:

Ahead of nesting season, you can discourage nesting in unsafe spots by planting shrubs or trees on your balcony or rooftop, or through some of these other methods:

  • Landscape adjustments: Adding shrubs or trees to reduce open sightlines. Geese prefer open areas where they can watch for predators.
  • Scare balloons or kites: Place items with eyespots that move in the wind; reposition them periodically.
  • Flagging/mylar tape/garbage bags: Attach to stakes so they move unpredictably in the wind.
  • Ultrasonics: Devices that emit sounds uncomfortable for birds but not for humans or pets.
  • Lights that deter geese
  • Motion‑activated sprinklers or lights
  • Inflatable scare devices

Thank you for looking out for wildlife!
